2018 Fall Newsletter

Description:

Stone Church
The Village of Oriskany Falls Board of Trustees along with the Stone Church Committee is working on phase two of the Stone Church Rehabilitation Project. To date, the Village and Committee have secured funding to replace the roof, restore 8 stained glass windows and replace the two front doors. The Committee has worked extremely hard to clean the building and it looks great!

The Village will have Thoma Development write a grant to the Environmental Protection Fund for Historic Preservation, along with the help from Architect Ted Bartlett from Crawford and Stearns. We are hoping to restore the steeple, ceiling, interior work, masonry and possibly repair the remaining stained glass windows. This grant is a 75% to 25% match, so depending on how much it will cost, we may need to have a phase three. Here are some pictures of the building. Stay tuned for more information and an open house in the spring.

DPW NEWS
Leaf pickup will be completed November 19th. Please sort leaves from branches and put on the side of the road, between the curb and sidewalk. Not in the road or storm drains.

It is the responsibility of the property owner to keep the water meter in a safe weather tight environment. If the meter freezes during the winter you may be charged to replace it and the water that runs through the meter is your responsibility.

NOTICE- Hydrant Flushing will be Wednesday, October 17th at midnight.

During the winter months it is especially helpful if you please bring your trash cans in before you go to work.
Winter Parking- The Village has Laws that prevent parking on any street overnight between November 15th and April 15th; parking on any sidewalk in the Village is prohibited; and there are one hour parking zones in front of the Post Office and Bank area, please read the signs. If you would like to see copies of these Laws they are in the Office or posted on our website.

Urgent- Your Help Is Needed
The Village has notified the residents of their interest in applying for another CDBG Housing Grant. In order to have a successful application, we must have your cooperation. Since March, the Village has been asking you to fill out an income survey and return to either Thoma Development or the Village Hall when you are paying your Quarterly Utility Bill. The surveys are completely confidential. To this date we have only had 13 surveys returned and that isn’t enough to apply for a housing grant. So please, fill out the enclosed survey and return them ASAP. This grant has helped 30 homes in Oriskany Falls and could help 15 more. Thank you for helping your neighbors.

Village Office Hours
This past summer the Village Hall Office hours were 7:30AM to 4PM Monday through Thursday and then 7:30AM to 1:30PM on Fridays. As of September 1st the Village Hall has resumed normal hours; Monday to Friday 8AM to 4PM. Did you know?  If at any time you stop at the Village Hall to pay a bill and the office is closed, your payments can be placed in the drop box located to the left of the front door! This is a secured drop box that is accessible with a key from the inside. Payments will be applied when the office reopens.

OFFD News
The Oriskany Falls Volunteer Fire Department will be conducting our annual Fund Drive and Recruitment Effort in October.  We appreciate your continued support of our organization.
We are in URGENT need of new members interested in becoming active Firefighters, Fire Police and/or Emergency Medical Technicians.  There will be Basic Firefighter and Fire Police classes starting soon at the fire station in Oriskany Falls.  If you are interested, please stop by the firehouse on any Monday night or call Fire Chief Russ Petrie at 821-3387.

The 2018 National Fire Prevention Week is October 7th-13th.  This year’s theme is “LOOK, LISTEN, LEARN.  BE AWARE.  FIRE CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE”.  Please take a few moments to review the following fire safety tips:
Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.
• Practice your home fire drill twice a year.  Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.  Have a meeting place outside where everyone will meet after they exit.
• Unattended cooking in the kitchen is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.
• Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires during the winter months.  Space heaters are the type of equipment most often involved in home heating fires.  Have a 3 foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.
• Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.  WE CAN’T HELP YOU IF WE CAN’T FIND YOU!
• Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. Once you get outside, stay outside.  Never go back inside a burning building. Call the fire department by dialing 911 from a cell phone or a neighbor’s phone.  Stay outside until you are told by the fire department that it is safe to return.

In conjunction with the Oriskany Falls American Legion, we will again be hosting “Breakfast with Santa” in December for the children in our community.  We hope to see you there.
