2021 Spring Newsletter April 1st

Description:

Help to keep Parks and Streets Clean

With winter just about over, and the snow gone, garbage is making its presence known all over the Village. Whether it’s at the parks or on the side of the road there is quite a bit of debris. The Village DPW have been busy cleaning up Douglass Park and Maple Ave Park, almost daily. Please talk to your children about their use at the public parks. If you bring it in, take it out, or simply put in one of the cans at the park. We want our parks to be welcoming to residents of all ages.

Vandalism is still here

The Village of Oriskany Falls has seen many years of vandalism at both its public parks. Your tax dollars pay to keep equipment there and for seasonal maintenance. It gets very costly to repair the gazebo, lights, benches, play structures and water fountain.  Please help to keep the park safe and call the police if you see any inappropriate behavior at the parks. Talk to your children about how they can help to keep parks safe and clean. It takes a village, thank you!

Fire Works Over Oriskany FallS

Due to COVID-19 restrictions and precautions the 21st Annual Fireworks over Oriskany Falls Celebration has been tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 28th. We may not have the same style of celebration as we are used to in the past, but we will have a wonderful fireworks show! Planning is underway, if you have ideas or wish to help out please contact Amber Bell at 315-335-0129.

Community Choice Aggregation Program-

 New rate

Constellation New Energy has provided a new competitive fixed rate starting July 2021 for a 24 month period. If you have already opted out of this program 2 years ago, you will not be opted into the program and will not need to call to opt out. Information will be sent to all residents currently in the program informing you about the process. If you aren’t in the program and wish to join please contact CCA. There are no fees to join or terminate. The Village Clerk has their contact information.

Green Waste Pickup

Please put all green waste out to the curb in a dump-able container.  Green waste consists of grass clippings, leaves, weeds and brush. Do not put dirt or rocks in with green waste. Branches must be cut into 5ft sections and put to the curb, if you bundle them it’s easier to pick up. The Village DPW will not pickup branches that are larger than stated. NOTICE: The Village will remove branches that have been trimmed or fallen off; we will NOT remove an entire tree. If you have cut down a whole tree, it is your responsibility to remove it in its entirety. Green waste will be picked up on Mondays and Fridays, weather permitting.

Hydrant Flushing

To the residents of the Village of Oriskany Falls and outside Village water users, hydrant flushing will be held on Wednesday May 19th at midnight. You may experience discolored water during/after the flushing. Do not wash whites during flushing.

Trash Days

Spring Trash Days are scheduled for May 24th through May 28th. Residents are asked to leave junk at the roadside, properly sorted. DPW will make separate trips for electronics, plastic and tires. Once your road has been done they will not backtrack. Do not put junk out until the weekend before. No dog waste in junk piles please!

WE WILL PICK UP- Used furniture, metal parts, bike and mower parts, mattresses, clean empty paint cans, metal lawn furniture, small household items, electronics and small appliances. Make sure you sort the items! Electronics must be separate. Tires will be picked up ONLY if you have proof that you paid the $3 charge at the Village Hall and the tire must be off the rim. Throughout the year appliances can be picked up for a fee. Refrigerators will not be picked up unless you provide documentation that you have officially removed the Freon.

Pick up after your Dog

If you take your dog for a walk in the Village of Oriskany Falls, it is your responsibility as the dog owner to bring baggies to clean up after they relieve themselves. But if you forget to take a bag with you, the Village has two dog waste stations in Douglass Park and one at Maple Ave Park.  It’s NY State Law and Town of Augusta Law to leash your dog and to clean up their waste. Please be conscience of this and clean up after your animal. Thank you.

Village Election

This years’ election was held on Tuesday, March 16 from noon to 9pm at the Village Hall. The positions up for election were for the Mayor and two Trustees, with new terms at four years each. Mayor Steven Jeffers and Trustees Brian Bell and Gerald Pedersen were re-elected. Can you guess how many people voted in this year’s election? There are 397 registered voters in our Village and just slightly over 5% of those voted!

Budget

A Public Hearing is set for April 19, 2021 for the proposed 2021-22 Budget at 6:15PM. Copies of the budget can be viewed at the Village Hall or on the website. The proposed tax rate is set at $11.7391, that’s $0.07 less than last year.

April Utility Bill

Final day to pay your April 2021 Utility Bill without penalties is May 15th and all unpaid bills as of May 24th will be charged to the Village Property Tax Bills. Outside Village water users will have until June 7th to pay their bills.

Summer Recreation

The Village Board is looking to have a Summer Recreation Program this year. It may look different than what we have had in the past. We have guidance from New York State Department of Health and we will be planning exciting activities at the Maple Ave Park.

At this time we are unsure if field trips may happen this year, due to the busing rules. As we get closer to the start of the program we will know more. Please contact the Village Clerk at 315-821-7275 if you are planning on sending your children to the program so we can get an idea of how to move forward. Proposed start date is Monday, July 5th and usually goes for 5 weeks Monday through Friday from 9am to 2PM. The program is for children that live in the Village of Oriskany Falls and Town of Augusta that have completed Kindergarten through Sixth grade.

Home Town Hero Banners

Banners are being designed now for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. If you know of a local hometown hero and wish to donate funds to create the banner or if you are a family that wishes to have a banner for your hero and do not have the funds, please see the Village Clerk.

Banners for deceased hero’s will be hung up by Memorial Day and taken down before the 4th of July, and then the living hero’s banners will be hung up before Veterans Day and then taken down for the winter. All banners will be stored in a tote at the DPW Garage.

If you are interested in adding to the Home Town Hero collection all we need is a picture, rank, division and name, plus the fee of $109. This will be an ongoing project. Please see the Village Clerk if interested.

Codes

The annual spring Oriskany Falls Village clean up where you can dispose of all unwanted, nuisance and junk debris from your property will be May 24 through 28.  As a reminder after the clean up dates any violation of the following New York State Codes, will result in a violation notice issued and ultimate Appearance Ticket into the Town Court.  At that time you will be directed to clean up the debris at your own expense with a fine included.

302.1 Sanitation. All exterior property and premises shall be maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary condition. The occupant shall keep that part of the exterior property which such occupant occupies or controls in a clean and sanitary condition.

307.1 Accumulation of rubbish or garbage. All exterior property and premises shall be free from any accumulation of rubbish or garbage.

A safety item that many Village residents forget about is the requirement to have your house identified with your house number that allows the Fire Department, Police and Ambulance to find your house quickly in the event of an emergency.  If you stand in front of your house and the address is not visible, you should install the numbers.  If the emergency responders cannot find your house precious minutes could be wasted.

As a reminder all Portable outdoor fireplaces shall be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and shall not be operated within 20 feet of a structure or combustible materials.  You are responsible for any damage caused by your fire.
