Low Income Household Water Assistance Program Starting December 1st you may be eligible to apply for funding to help pay your past water and sewer bills to avoid service interruptions, when the moratorium on shutoffs expires January 1st. NYS Governor Kathy Hochul has announced $69.8 million in federal funding that is made available beginning December 1 to help low-income New Yorkers pay past-due bills for drinking water and wastewater. The “Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program” will be administered by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) and will provide eligible individuals and families with up $2,500 for drinking water arrears and $2,500 for wastewater arrears.
The Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program is focused on support for low-income households (household of four with a gross monthly income of $5,249 or less) with service bills that are at least 20 days past-due (especially those paying a high proportion of their income for drinking water and wastewater services) and is expected to provide support for more than 105,000 households statewide. Funds will be paid directly to the utility (Village of Oriskany Falls).
Applications will be accepted online and by mail starting December 1. For more information, including on how to apply, visit otda.ny.gov/lihwap. Those enrolled in the Home Energy Assistance Program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, in receipt of Temporary Assistance or living alone and receiving Supplemental Security Income are categorically eligible, but still need to apply for assistance. For more information about LIHWAP call the toll-free OTDA Hotline at 1-800-342-3009. DPW NEWS *In these cold months ahead we would like to remind property owners that it is their responsibility to keep the water meter in a safe, weathertight environment. If the meter freezes during the winter, you may be charged to replace it and all the water that goes through the meter will be billed to you. *During the winter months it is especially helpful to please bring in your trash cans after garbage has been picked up. The village DPW plow sidewalks when needed and will not be responsible for mangled garbage cans that end up in the road. Yearly Winter Parking newsOnce again the Village DPW will be working hard to keep the roads and sidewalks clear of snow. NY State Law and Village Law prohibit overnight parking on all streets in the Village from November 15 through April 15th. The Town/Village and County work through the night to remove snow. If your vehicle is in their way you will get a ticket and possibly have your car removed. Please consider where you park. Call the Village Hall if you need help finding a spot for your car overnight. There is NO parking on any Village sidewalks at any time throughout the year. When shoveling or plowing snow; do not put it into the street. Article 1219 of New York State VTL prohibits plowing, shoveling or blowing snow into a street or highway. This law also stipulates that anyone that places or permits to be placed upon any highway any material which interferes with the safe use of the highway shall immediately remove the same or cause it to be removed. Visit the following website for more on the law: www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/VAT/1219 Every spring the Village DPW needs to repair damaged yards from plowing sidewalks. To prevent this, the Village DPW suggests that homeowners put up sidewalk markers. The sidewalks are plowed as a convenience to residents and usually get cleaned in the early morning hours. If an emergency arises within the Village, sidewalk plowing will have to wait until the problem is resolved. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to put ice melt on sidewalks, if they need it. Travel with care! Village Election This years’ election is to be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at the Village Clerk’s Office, 185 North Main Street, Oriskany Falls, from 12PM until 9PM.
